An
estimated 70,000 Illinois college students may be eligible for a new
grant program recently signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, state
financial aid officials say. The MAP Plus program will provide up
to $500 to each sophomore, junior, and senior who is not eligible
for a Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant and whose family's adjusted
gross income is under $200,000.
"The new MAP Plus grants are designed to help students from middle-income
families," said Cheryl Warmann, director of student financial assistance
at Oakton Community College. "We are urging all students who fail
to qualify for other types of monetary aid to investigate their eligibility
for this newly-created solution."
MAP
Plus has been approved only for the 2006-07 academic year. After that,
the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) will evaluate the
program and make a recommendation about its future. To start the grant
process, students must first complete the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA), available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
MAP
Plus was approved by the Illinois General Assembly during the spring
session. Funding for the grants will come from restructuring or selling
part of the student loan portfolio now held by ISAC, and other efforts
to maximize ISAC revenues.
