In response to the thousands of hate crimes reported annually in the
United States, Oakton Community College will host a series of events
to increase awareness about violence against gays and lesbians. All
events take place at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
The Performing
Arts at Oakton will present "The Laramie Project," based on
the 1998 murder of 21-year-old college student Matthew Shepard. Written
by Moises Kaufman and Tectonic Theater Project, and directed by Jeff
Ginsberg, "The Laramie Project" depicts how residents of a small Wyoming
town react to the contemptible hate crime.
In connection
with this performance, Chicago artist Ann Tyler will display
her oversized prints and artists' books that examine both overt and
covert violence against gays and lesbians. Tyler will visit Oakton
to discuss her work on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m., and the exhibition
of her work will remain on display in the theater lobby through Nov.
30. Admission is free.
Performances
of "The Laramie Project" are Fridays, Nov. 14 and 21 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays,
Nov. 15, 22, and 29 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Nov. 16, 23, and 30 at
2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students
and seniors. To order tickets, call the Oakton Box Office at 847-635-1900,
