Enjoy
Hawaiian music, dance, and history when Na Mele Aloha, the Hawaiian
Music Club at Oakton Community College, celebrates Makahiki, starting
at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9, at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, 1600
E. Golf Road. The public is invited to attend this free event.
Makahiki, which runs from November through February, was first celebrated
by the ancient Hawaiians to signify a period of spiritual and cultural
renewal. Along with the Hawaii Club of Northwestern University, Na
Mele Aloha will pay tribute to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of
the United States Army. During World War II, this unit of Japanese
American volunteers, mostly from the Hawaiian Islands, fought in Europe
and in less than two years of combat earned more than 18,000 individual
honors to become the highest decorated unit in U.S. military history.
The Hawaiian Music Club is open to those who enjoy playing, singing,
and listening to Hawaiian music. The advisor is Michael Adamczyk,
a member of Oakton's music faculty.
