The Oakton Community College history department is reviving the old and bringing in the new with three history courses for the 2003 spring semester.A brand new course being offered next semester is Brazil to Independence 1500 - 1822 (HIS 290), taught by Marguita Zaretzski, a native of South America's largest country. This class examines the history of Brazil from pre-colonial times through Portuguese occupation and focuses on Brazilian film and literature.
"This is a new initiative designed to widen the range of courses offered," said Erick Mann, associate professor of history. "Each semester, we plan to offer a couple of 'topic' classes that cover various areas of interest."
Two previously established courses returning to active duty are History of Modern Africa (HIS 211) and Women in Western Civilization (HIS 236).
History of Modern Africa, taught by Mann, focuses on the history of Africa from European Colonization to the present, with emphasis on African cultures, the impact of colonialism, apartheid, and present-day developments. Women in Western Civilization, taught by Wendy Maier, is a survey of women's positions, roles, and contributions in history from ancient Greece to modern times.
