Dr.
Mardge Cohen, one of the world's leading authorities on women
and HIV, discusses her work in Chicago and Rwanda as part of Women's
History Month at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des
Plaines. Dr. Cohen's keynote address, "Caring for Women with
HIV: Global and Local Challenges," takes place at 11 a.m.,
Monday, March 26, in Room 1610. The public is invited to this free
event.
For
30 years, Dr. Cohen has worked at Cook County Hospital (now Stroger
Hospital), where she founded the Women and Children HIV Program. In
2004, she began traveling to Rwanda to work with grass roots organizations
to provide care for women and children with HIV. Dr. Cohen is currently
director of women's HIV research at the CORE Center.
On Thursday, March 22, Oakton presents "Consuming Culture:
The Art of Mary Ellen Croteau," a conversation about the
bias of social icons, with one of Chicago's most prominent multimedia
artists. This event begins at 9 a.m. with a light breakfast reception
in Room 1610.
Additional
Women's History Month events at Oakton include "brown bag" lunch discussions
on contemporary books and topics, and a potluck supper and screening
of Iron Jawed Angels, an award-winning film about suffragettes
Alice Paul and Lucy Burns.
Women's
History Month events are sponsored by the Women's Studies Program
and the Oakton Chapter of the Association of Women in Community Colleges.
