Oakton
Community College is joining the effort to help increase enrollment
in global studies programs nationwide.
Oakton
President Margaret Lee recently attended the Illinois Presidents'
and Provosts' Forum on Increasing Opportunities for Study Abroad in
Chicago. The meeting allowed state public university presidents and
chancellors to discuss the challenges they face in enhancing study
abroad opportunities for students. The forum also addressed ways to
meet the national goal of having one million students participate
in global studies programs by 2017.
"Participation
in international programs provides a unique experience," said Lee.
"Such programs help us to better understand cultures that are different
from our own. In fact, Oakton's mission statement includes educating
all students to be capable global citizens."
Oakton
is a member of the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and
Programs (ICISP) and offers cost-effective study abroad opportunities.
Currently, Oakton students have the opportunity to study in Great
Britain, Australia, Austria, and Costa Rica. In 2007, Oakton students
will have additional opportunities to travel to China and Puerto Rico.
