Oakton Panel To Deliberate Iraq War Consequences

An Iraqi native who worked under the regime of Saddam Hussein will be featured Tuesday, Oct. 29, as Oakton Community College examines the potential consequences of a U.S. war against Iraq. The presentation, entitled "Iraq: Rush to War?," will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Studio One (Room 1366) on Oakton's Des Plaines campus.

Sponsored by the Board of Student Affairs, this event is free and open to the public.

Taseen Atabbi, a former civil engineer who emigrated from Iraq in the 1990s, will talk about the culture and politics of Iraq, especially as it relates to the country's history as one of the world's most important sources of crude oil. An open forum among faculty and students will follow, moderated by Andre Salsedo, adjunct professor of cultural anthropology.

"President Bush talks about going to war against Iraq, yet fails to provide American citizens with basic information about the implications of such a war," says Salsedo. "We must all think about how the war will affect Iraq and its people, how it will impact terrorism in the United States, and how it may alter future relations between Palestine and Israel."

Oakton Community College offers degree and certificate curricula for students preparing to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university, as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers. Oakton is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, Illinois Community College Board and American Association of Community Colleges.
