'Japanimation' Workshops Offered at Oakton

"Japanimation" workshops for youths interested in anime and manga - the Japanese art forms popularized by TV cartoons such as Pokemon and Dragonball Z - will be offered March 20 and 21 at Oakton Community College. Classes for students in sixth grade and up are held at both Oakton campuses, in Des Plaines and Skokie.

On Saturday, March 20, students may register for either Japanese Anime/Manga I or Computer Graphics/Design I. Class activities include creating an action hero or comic strip character, and printing out the results on a poster, book cover, or game cards.

Parents who accompany their children may register for Blocking the Internet I, to learn how to better monitor their child's e-mail, chat room, and Web access on the Internet.

On Sunday, March 21, students may register for either Japanese Anime/Manga II or Computer Graphics/Design II. Parents may sign up for Blocking the Internet II.

Classes run 10 a.m. - noon, and 1 - 3 p.m. each day. No supervision is provided between noon and 1 p.m. The course fee for each class is $35, and the deadline for application is Wednesday, March 10. To request a workshop application, call 847-635-1425 and leave a message with your name, address (including zip code), and daytime phone numbers.
