Joel
Vanderheyden has been named jazz band and woodwinds instructor
at Oakton Community College, officials announced.
Vanderheyden's
musical background includes performing with a nine-piece band in the
Washington D.C., area and co-founding the jazz ensemble, "M Theory."
He has performed with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, opened for B.B.
King at the 2000 Montreaux Jazz Festival, and participated in the
2002 Vienne Jazz Festival in France.
Vanderheyden
holds a master's degree in jazz studies from the University of Maryland,
and has a bachelor's degree in music education from the University
of Minnesota-Morris. Prior to joining Oakton, Vanderheyden was the
jazz band director at the University of Maryland and a saxophone instructor
at Elizabeth Seton High School. He also has been a music instructor
at Minneapolis South High School and Hancock Elementary School.
