Four members of the Oakton Jazz Band received "Outstanding Musicianship" awards - more than any other school - during the Skyway Jazz Festival at Elgin Community College.Winners of the individual award were Les "Papa" Feller of Niles, clarinet and soprano saxophone; Julie Hart of Des Plaines, trumpet; Adam Kraus of Park Ridge, bass; and Bill Kwaak of Des Plaines, guitar. The Oakton Jazz Band also features Mitchell Portugal and Max Voloshin, alto saxophones; Andrew Funk, flute, alto sax; John Kuchta, tenor sax; Tom Ahrens, trumpet; Regina Ready, piano; Kindra Braunn, trombone; Matt Daniel, guitar; and Charles Van Slambrouck and Kurt Loeffler, percussion.
The band's program consisted of Toshiko Akiyoshi's "Kogun," the Latin-influenced "Song for My Father," and an American classic, "Sweet Georgia Brown." A panel of professional musicians selected the winners from bands representing seven Skyway Conference colleges.
"The judges were impressed by our music selections, as well as the fact that we were the only school band that allowed every member to solo," said Theresa Lams, director of the jazz band and adjunct professor of woodwinds and jazz. "Oakton is by no means the biggest band in the Skyway conference, but our hardworking students made a huge statement with their performance."
The Oakton Jazz Band and Jazz Group will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the TenHoeve Center on Oakton's Des Plaines campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
