Introduction to Journalism at Oakton

Aspiring journalists can watch their byline roll off the presses by enrolling in a new English course, Introduction to Journalism (EGL 150), during the spring 2003 semester at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road.

Introduction to Journalism will give students real "hands-on" experience in publishing The OCCurrence, Oakton's award-winning student newspaper. Students are involved with the newspaper's planning, writing, editing, photography, art, layout, and production.

"Journalism involves writing for a 'real' audience and purpose and teaches important lessons about research - how to get the facts and how to be fair and ethical in reporting what you find," says Lynn Woodbury, professor and chair of English. "This course will be great fun for writers and useful to people in many different fields, including business and marketing."

The instructor for the course is Dennis Polkow, an award-winning journalist and the new faculty advisor for The OCCurrence, who has written extensively for publications such as the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Reader, New City, and Inside Chicago. During his 12-year association with the Tribune, Polkow corresponded from Europe, the Middle East, and Far East. He helped launch the Tribune's "ArtsWatch" section, and was a regular contributor to the "Friday," "Sunday Arts," and "Tempo" sections, as well as TribNews, the paper's in-house employee publication. Polkow also developed and served as editor of Spotlight, the award-winning arts and entertainment section of the Press Publications newspaper chain.

Introduction to Journalism, a three-credit-hour course, will meet from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 13. Registration for spring semester began Nov. 18.
