Learn
the ropes of newspaper publishing by enrolling in a special seven-week
course this summer at Oakton Community College.
Introduction to Journalism (EGL 150-701) gives students a "hands-on"
experience in publishing the OCCurrence, Oakton's award winning student
newspaper. Under the supervision of faculty advisor and award-winning
journalist Dennis Polkow, students will be involved with all aspects
of the publication, including planning, writing, editing, photography,
art direction, layout, production, and Web design. Layout sessions
include free pizza and guest speakers.
"This course will give students the opportunity to spend a summer
learning the ins and outs of journalism, especially how addictive
it is to see your name in print," says Polkow.
Introduction to Journalism meets 1:30 - 4:45 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays,
starting June 14, at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
Independent study credit for working on the OCCurrence also
is available.
The OCCurrence received nine state awards and two national
awards for excellence April 14-15 at the Illinois Community College
Journalism Association Spring Conference.
