King Lear Festival at Oakton's Skokie Campus

Robert Falls, Michael Halberstam, and Andrew Wachtel are among the popular lecturers scheduled for "The Many Faces of King Lear," a six-week celebration of Shakespeare's classic tale of family conflict, presented by the Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.

Registration for the entire 11-event series is $50; individual lectures are $10 each.

The program opens Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2:30 - 4 p.m., with Halberstam, artistic director of the Writers' Theatre, discussing "King Lear as Theater." On Wednesday, Aug. 15, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (with a lunch break 12 - 1 p.m.), a group of Oakton faculty, staff, and Emeritus students will present an unabridged staged reading of King Lear.

Throughout the festival, participants will be able to view and discuss various film versions of King Lear, including those starring Orson Welles, James Earl Jones, and Paul Scofield in the title role. Wachtel, dean of the graduate school at Northwestern University and an expert in Russian and South Slavic culture, discusses the Russian film version, Korol Lir, 2:30 - 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Falls, artistic director of the Goodman Theatre, closes the festival 2:30 - 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, with a wide-ranging Q-and-A session.
