Falls, Michael Halberstam, and Andrew
Wachtel are among the popular lecturers scheduled for "The
Many Faces of King Lear," a six-week celebration
of Shakespeare's classic tale of family conflict, presented by the
Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave.,
Skokie.
Registration
for the entire 11-event series is $50; individual lectures are $10
each.
The
program opens Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2:30 - 4 p.m., with Halberstam, artistic
director of the Writers' Theatre, discussing "King Lear as
Theater." On Wednesday, Aug. 15, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (with a lunch
break 12 - 1 p.m.), a group of Oakton faculty, staff, and Emeritus
students will present an unabridged staged reading of King Lear.
Throughout
the festival, participants will be able to view and discuss various
film versions of King Lear, including those starring Orson
Welles, James Earl Jones, and Paul Scofield in the title role. Wachtel,
dean of the graduate school at Northwestern University and an expert
in Russian and South Slavic culture, discusses the Russian film version,
Korol Lir, 2:30 - 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Falls,
artistic director of the Goodman Theatre, closes the festival 2:30
- 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, with a wide-ranging Q-and-A session.
