Judith
Mayzel, professor of library services at Oakton Community College,
is the winner of the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) Academic
Library Staff Member of the Year for 2003. Mayzel will be honored
Friday, March 12, at the NSLS Annual Membership Awards Banquet in
Kildeer, Ill.
The award
is given to an individual in recognition of exceptional contributions
to NSLS and its members. In announcing the honor, the NSLS commended
Mayzel saying, "Our member libraries appreciate her energy and extreme
generosity in sharing her time and knowledge."
"Judith
is an excellent representative of academic libraries, and she has
taken a lead role in promoting our library to the faculty and students,"
said Gary Newhouse, dean of library and media services at Oakton.
The
NSLS also will honor Oakton with the Innovation Award, which
is presented to a library in recognition of a unique new service,
program, or promotion that has a positive impact for patrons. Oakton
was cited for its "Beautiful Minds" program, considered by the NSLS
to "foster and build strong librarian-faculty collaboration and is
an opportunity to view the presenter as passionate about research
and the use of libraries." The "Beautiful Minds" program, which debuted
last spring, introduces students and community members to the academic
passions of Oakton faculty, staff, and administrators.
The NSLS
is an association of more than 650 academic, public, school, and special
libraries in north suburban Cook, Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties.
