the Lyric Opera of Chicago's 2007-08 season by enrolling in sessions
offered by the Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College. This
seven-week course meets 1 - 3 p.m., starting Friday, Oct. 12, at Oakton's
Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. Course fee is
$100.
Previews include background information on the composer and the opera,
highlighted by audio and video excerpts. Scheduled sessions include:
La
Traviata (Oct. 12), Verdi's tragic story of a Parisian courtesan.
La Boheme (Oct. 19), Puccini's popular opera about struggling
young artists.
Giulio Cesare (Oct. 26), Handel's Baroque masterpiece featuring
Cleopatra.
Doctor Atomic (Oct. 26), a modern work about the 1945 debut
of the atom bomb.
Die Frau Ohne Schatten (Nov. 2), a fairy tale opera by Richard
Strauss.
Falstaff (Nov. 9), Verdi's final opera based on a popular
Shakespearean character.
The Barber of Seville (Nov. 16), one of the most performed
operas by Rossini.
Eugene Onegin (Nov. 30), Tchaikovsky's opera about a cynical
anti-hero.
Oakton's
Emeritus Program offers credit and noncredit courses, lectures, seminars,
and tours, while providing a chance to share learning experiences
with peers age 50 and over.
