Best-selling authors Robert Bly and John Lee will be the keynote speakers
at the 11th
Annual Men's Day Conference on Sunday, Nov. 23, at Oakton Community
College, 1600 E. Golf Road.
"Men's
Day at Oakton has long been an important event in the men's community,"
said Gregory Baldauf, Ph.D, professor of student development at Oakton.
"Robert Bly is coming out of retirement for our event this year, and
the day will be elevated by his presence."
Bly and
Lee's keynote, "The Psychology and Spirituality of Failure," will
examine how, despite their best efforts, men still manage to lose
marriages, families, health, and happiness. Their presentation also
looks at the value of failure and how to turn defeat into success.
"Men's
Day" features more than 20 workshops and seminars dealing with emotional
and spiritual pain, shamanism, communication, and meditation, including:
"Gratitude
- The Building Block of Happiness," with motivational speaker Anita
Fontana. This session is designed to change negative thinking and
to improve personal and professional relationships.
"Dealing
with Anger and Pain," with Jack Dohr, an anger and pain management
teacher at Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. Dohr will share
his expertise in how to control anger.
"Successful
Fathering After Divorce," with Marty Rosenheck and John Goby, reviews
recent research that shows the importance of fathers staying connected
to children after divorce.
"The
Wisdom Years: An Experiential Weekend Retreat for Men 50 Years and
Over," with Edward Ravine and Jacques Gourguechon, an exploration
of how men can live their later years with health, meaning and soul.
"Making
Peace with Your Inner Teenager: Becoming a True Adult," with Gary
McCabe. Discover ways to transform the teenager inside you into a
positive force.
Men's
Day is evolved from the popular Men's Program at Oakton, founded by
sociology professor Steve Schada in 1982, and culminates a men's weekend.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, Oakton hosts a national gathering of men for
the Eighth Annual At-Home Dads Convention, and that same evening,
at 7:30 p.m., presents "An Evening with Robert Bly," featuring the
men's movement leader reading from his recently acclaimed editions
of poetry.
Registration
for Men's Day is $60 before Nov. 18, and $75 at the door. Admission
for "An Evening with Robert Bly" is a $15 donation to the Oakton Men's
Program Scholarship Fund. Combined registration for Men's Day and
the At-Home Dads Convention is $85.
