Former
Oakton Community College pitcher Alex Morales has received
an invitation to report to spring training camp with the Montreal
Expos' major league pitching staff on Feb. 18.
The
call for the right-hander from Hersey High School in Arlington Heights
comes less than a year after Morales' departure from Oakton following
the 2003 season. In his six-game minor league stint with the Jupiter
Expos, part of the rookie Gulf Coast League, Morales was 1-1 with
a 0.90 ERA and recorded 10 strikeouts in 10 innings.
Morales
then was promoted last summer to the Florida State League, bypassing
the Short Season A and Low A minor league levels. Morales compiled
one save and eight strikeouts in five and one-third innings for the
Brevard County Manatees.
Armed
with a 90 mile-per-hour fastball, Morales was rated by Baseball
America as having the best slider in the entire Expos organization.
For Oakton last season, Morales sported a 5-0 record along with a
1.71 ERA and 60 strikeouts. Last spring, Morales fanned 18 batters
en route to a no-hitter against McHenry Country College in the Skyway
Conference Tournament.
Before
leaving for Spring Training in Viera, Fla., Morales will work as a
volunteer coach for Oakton assisting the pitching staff.
The Raiders
finished the 2003 campaign with a record 41 wins while capturing the
Region IV Sectional Championship. Oakton starts the 2004 baseball
campaign March 13 in Fort Pierce, Fla., and plays its first home game
March 22 against Joliet.
