OAKTON TOUR TRAVELS THE ROAD TO MOROCCO
Explore the ancient sites and historic cities of Morocco when Oakton Community College’s travel/study program journeys to the land of "a thousand and one nights." Three trips are scheduled in 2001: April 21-May 5, Sept. 29-Oct. 13 and Oct. 13-27.
Travel to some of Morocco’s most colorful cities, including Rabat, Marrakesh, and Fez, where you’ll participate in the seminar, "Fez: The Spiritual City of Morocco," presented by a faculty member of University Med Ben Abdellah. Visit local markets and observe talented artisans at work, including wood carvers, rug weavers and the famous tanners and dyers of fine Moroccan leather.
Drive through bark oak and cork forests to Meknes, the "Moroccan Versailles," and admire the Bab-El-Mansour and the Bab-Berdaine gates, built into the 25-mile-long wall that surrounds this ancient city. In Marrakesh, you’ll visit the richly decorated rooms of the Saadian Tombs and the remains of the 16th century El Badi Palace. At the enormous Djem-El-Fna Square you’ll enjoy the activities of local entertainers, including storytellers, fire-eaters, acrobats and fortune-tellers. There will be ample opportunity to appreciate Morocco’s cultural richness during your adventure. Throughout the tour, you’ll sample native dishes at specially arranged meals. A visit to a private home will give you a glimpse into the everyday lives and customs of the people.
Of course, no trip to Morocco would be complete without a visit to Casablanca, the country’s largest city and commercial capital. Tour the city and stop at the Mosque Hassan II, the world’s second largest mosque.
