Oakton Wins National Science Foundation Grant

Oakton Community College has won a prestigious National Science Foundation grant, worth nearly $250,000, to enhance the success of its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students, school officials announced.

The NSF awarded a total of 16 grants worth an estimated $5 million under its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) - four grants in each category of degree-granting institutions (associate's, bachelor's, master's and Ph.D.'s). More than 175 colleges and universities had submitted proposals seeking nearly $60 million in grants.

The $249,992 grant is effective January 15, 2003, and expires December 31, 2005.

"We are extremely honored to be one of only four community colleges in the U.S. selected to implement this three-year project," said Margaret Lee, Oakton's president. "Our team is excited about the difference this award will make in the lives of Oakton students."

Principal investigators for the project, entitled "Partnership to Increase STEM Enrollment and Student Success," are Tingxiu Wang, professor of mathematics at Oakton, instructional specialist Gloria Liu and associate professor Joseph Kotowski. Project partners include Maine Township High School District 207 and Niles Township High School District 219.

"This NSF grant allows us to focus on Oakton students and support activities that connect Oakton faculty to area high school students and their teachers, as well as key business and industry leaders," said Wang. "We also intend to establish regular programs that will provide students with additional academic support, and facilitate their transfer to four-year institutions."

Established in 1969, Oakton Community College offers degree and certificate curricula for students preparing to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university, as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers. Oakton is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, Illinois Community College Board, and American Association of Community Colleges.
