A Night at the Opera
Oakton Faculty Members Showcase "A Century of Song"

Calling all opera lovers as the Oakton Community College Performing Arts Center presents "A Century of Song," featuring Dan Detloff and Eileen Berman, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. The performance will be held in the Footlik Theater on the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.

Back by popular demand, Detloff and Berman take audience members on a lyrical voyage through 19th century opera as they perform songs including Mozart's "This Heart is For You Dear"; Mendelssohn's "On The Wings of Music"; Gounod's "The Jewel Song"; and other selections from Thomas, Verdi, Lehar, Puccini, and Rossini.

Berman, a voice faculty member with Oakton's Music Department, has performed as a soloist for several musical organizations in the Chicago area, including the Skokie Valley Symphony, Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and Harper Symphony Orchestra. She also plans and showcases a variety of programs featuring opera, show tunes, musical comedy, and ethnic music for organizations and special occasions.

Detloff, director of voice at Oakton, was formerly a member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Lyric Opera in Chicago. He is currently a church musician and serves at several temples in the area.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors, and $10 for group and Partner in Performance (PIP) rate. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. The purchase of one full-price ticket to any of the eight programs in the fall 2002 performance schedule earns a free PIP membership to Oakton's Performing Arts Center and reduced ticket prices to other shows.

Other shows in the fall 2002 season at Oakton's Performing Arts Center include "Never the Sinner," a courtroom drama about the infamous Leopold and Loeb case (Oct. 11 - 13 and 18 - 20); "Mileva Einstein," the North American premiere of a play by renowned Eastern European playwright Vida Ognjenovic (Nov. 8 - 10 and 15 - 17); "Waiting for Godot," Samuel Beckett's minimalist drama (Nov. 19 - 24); and "Resident Alien," an intergalactic comedy (Dec. 6 - 8 and 13 - 15).
