Dozens
of growers bring their award-winning orchids to Oakton Community College,
1600 E. Golf Road, on Saturday and Sunday, April 3 and 4, as the Illinois
Orchid Society hosts its annual spring exhibition and sale. This is
the second year at Oakton for this prominent show, formerly held at
the Chicago Botanic Garden.
This
year's "Orchid Adventure" takes place in the spacious TenHoeve Center
at Oakton Community College, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
Admission is $5 per person. Children under 14 are admitted free when
accompanied by an adult. Photographers are welcome, however, tripods
are not permitted. For more information and driving directions, visit
the IOS Web site at www.iosoc.com,
or call Oakton's information desk at 847-635-1668.
Orchid
novices will find the sensual delight of tropical colors and rain
forest fragrances a powerful tonic to chase the winter blues. More
serious fans will discover what makes a prize-winning orchid, as a
team of recognized judges awards ribbons in more than 100 categories.
Vendors from across the country will offer plants for sale, and orchid
lovers may purchase cuttings from IOS member plants, many of them
unusual and rare, at amazingly low prices.
"Orchids
have an exotic reputation, but new propagation techniques make it
quite easy to successfully grow many species indoors," says Joe Dixler,
president of the Illinois Orchid Society. "Your choices are almost
infinite. Orchids have more species and hybrids than any other flower
in existence and come in all colors, shapes, fragrances, and sizes."
The
Orchid Show will feature plant raffles, cut flower sales, books, and
other supplies on both days. The very successful Michigan State Orchid
Fertilizer, formulated to compensate for Lake Michigan's unique water
deficiencies, will be on sale, along with society members' award winning
mix formula for repotting orchids. The mix also will be used for a
repotting service, available at a reasonable fee, to replace old mix
that can keep orchids from re-blooming.
