From riveting theater and thought-provoking lectures, to enjoyable musical performances, Performing Arts at Oakton has something for everyone in its upcoming fall season. All events take place at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.Three stimulating plays anchor the fall season at Oakton:
- "Boy Gets Girl," written by Rebecca Gilman and directed by Karol Verson, is the chilling account of a modern romance that takes a violent turn. Performances are Fridays, Oct. 10, 17, and 24 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 11, 18, and 25 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 12, 19, and 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. The public also is invited to attend "Unwanted Attention: Obsession and Objectification," a free preview lecture with Oakton professor Linda Zimmerman at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1.
- Based on the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, "The Laramie Project" depicts how the residents of a small Wyoming town react to the contemptible hate crime. Written by Moises Kaufman and Tectonic Theater Project, and directed by Jeff Ginsberg, performances of "The Laramie Project" are Fridays, Nov. 14 and 21 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Nov. 15, 22, and 29 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Nov. 16, 23 and 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. In connection with this performance, Chicago artist Ann Tyler will display her large prints and artists' books that examine violence against gays and lesbians. The exhibition will be on display Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
- Written by C.P. Taylor and directed by Mary Ringstad, "And a Nightingale Sang" offers the tale of a British family torn by the events of World War II. Performances are Fridays, Dec. 12 and 19 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Dec. 13 and 20 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Dec. 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Also, on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m., Oakton professor Richard Stacewicz will present "Gimme Shelter: War and Resilience," a discussion on how war impacts the daily lives of those caught in the middle. Admission is free and open to the public.
Music fans will thrill to the elegant improvisation of jazz violinist Diane Delin, Saturday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. Delin's musical resume includes tours with the Frank Sinatra Orchestra, and accompanying superstars such as Ray Charles and Garth Brooks. On Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m., Oakton instructors Theresa Lams and Michael Adamczyk present "Clearly Classical," an evening of chamber music with performances on clarinet and guitar. All general admission tickets are $8.
For those on a budget, four free musical performances are scheduled, including:
- Dulcet Duets - Salon singing, Renaissance folk songs, and Baroque music on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. and Sunday Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.
- Jazz Invasion - The Oakton Jazz Band lead by Theresa Lams on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 8 p.m.
- Clearly Classical II - Classical, contemporary, and original music, featuring the Oakton Guitar Ensemble, student quartets, trios, duets, and soloists on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.
- The Holidaze - Classical, contemporary, and original music featuring a variety of Oakton student performers on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m.
