Exciting New Season Slated for Oakton's "Passages"
Lecture Series Now Offered at Both Oakton Campuses

Passages, the popular weekly lecture series offered by Oakton Community College's Emeritus Program, returns this fall with exciting programs in two formats: a three-week series at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Rd., and a 14-week series at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.

The Des Plaines campus series meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays in Room 1606. The fee to attend is $6 for in-district residents age 60 and above, and $11 for out-of-district residents and those under age 60.

The three-week series begins on Oct. 7 with "Movements in 20th-Century Art: Photo-Realism," a slide presentation by James Krauss, professor of art and chair of Oakton's art department. On Oct. 14, Bill Sheldon, music historian and former WFMT host, will feature popular songs of the World War II era in his program, "Close to Enemy Lines in Europe." On Oct. 21, Leona Roen, Oakton professor emerita of computer information systems, reviews a short history of computers and demonstrates some frequently used applications in her presentation, "The Digital Revolution: From the Abacus and Quill Pens to Adventures in Cyberspace."

The 14-week Passages series at the Ray Hartstein Campus in Skokie meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in Room A151. The fee to attend is $25 for in-district residents age 60 and above, and $30 for out-of-district residents and those under age 60.

The program begins on Sept. 3 with "What's So Great About Cèzanne?" by Barbara Fiedler, docent at the Terra Museum of American Art. Other presentations in this series of lectures include "The Grapes of Wrath: From Novel to Film" by Emeritus film instructor Francine Sanders (Sept. 17); "The Impact of the Intifada on the Seeds of Peace Camp" by Bill Taylor, professor of political science at Oakton (Oct. 1); "The Life and Death of the League of Nations" by history buff James O'Neill (Oct. 22); "Economic Security and the Senior Vote" by Steve Carter, manager of state operations for AARP Illinois (Nov. 5).
