Explore current topics of interest around the world by enrolling in Passport to the World, a lecture series offered by Oakton Community College's Emeritus Program. The series of nine lectures is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays in Room Al51 at Oakton's Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie.The series begins on April 11 with "Czech Republic." Richard Farkas, professor of political science at DePaul University, will explore the illegal arms trade in Vaclav Havel's Czech Republic.
"Colombia" is the topic for April 18. John Beloncur, professor, School of Urban Planning at the University of Illinois Chicago, will explore issues relating to the country's 37-year insurgency.
Joyce Bremer, associate professor of economics at Oakton, will present "Germany: Economic Health" on April 25. The seminar will examine how the German economy has fared since reunification.
Sarah Hughes, Ph.D., will present "NAFTA Revisited" on May 2. Hughes will discuss the North American Free Trade Agreement's impact on relations between Mexico and the United States.
"Middle East" is the topic for May 9. Bill Taylor, professor of political science and chair of the Department of Historical and Policy Studies at Oakton, will describe the turbulent quest for peace between Palestine and Israel.
In his May 16 presentation, "Peru," Manuel Cuba, former United Nations worker in Peru, analyzes the country's efforts to shore up a lagging economy and aid its desperate farmers.
"Women Leaders in Asia," a discussion of the roles of three powerful women in three different Asian nations, will be presented by Scott Satterfield on May 23. Satterfield is an international businessman in the Asia-Pacific region.
Margaretta Swigert-Gacheru, former editor in chief of Women's World Banking/African News, will present "African Women in Business," on May 30. The role of women in Africa's financial development will be discussed.
Andrew B. Wachtel, professor, Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at Northwestern University, will present the final lecture on June 6, entitled "Can Macedonia Be Saved?" Wachtel will discuss the nation's long-term survival chances, and what measures it has done to prevent another major conflict in the Balkans.
Students age 60 and older who live in Oakton's district pay $45 for the series of nine lectures. Students under age 60 and those who live out of district pay $50. Proof of age and residency must be provided at registration. For more information, call (847) 635-1414.
