Nineteen
area high school students will gather with visiting Middle East students
at Oakton Community College, July 15 - 26, as part of Hands of
Peace, a program that promotes dialogue and friendship among
Israeli, Palestinian, and American youths.
Each
summer, Hands of Peace brings Jewish-Israeli, Palestinian-Israeli,
and West Bank Palestinian youths to Chicago's northwest suburbs for
a two-week experience of living together. Christian, Muslim, and Jewish
teens from Glenbrook South, Niles North, Niles West, Maine East, and
Evanston Township high schools will meet at Oakton with 19 Middle
East students for structured dialogue sessions and social activities.
The local teens play an important role in the program through their
interest in the omnipresent political conflict, and in developing
personal relationships among the Middle East participants, according
to Hands of Peace organizers.
"Oakton
is proud to host this important initiative and life-changing experience,"
said Oakton President Margaret Lee. "Hands of Peace constructively
brings together people who are unfortunately divided by politics and
religion."
Hands
of Peace was formed in 2002 through the combined efforts of Gretchen
Grad of Glenview Community Church, Deanna Jacobson of B'Nai Jehoshua
Beth Elohim Synagogue, and Nuha Dabousseh of the Islamic Cultural
Center.
