Mike
Pinto, head baseball coach at Oakton Community College, reached
a career milestone April 25, earning his 100th victory in just three
seasons.
"This is definitely rewarding," Pinto said following the 11-1 win
over College of Lake County. "However, the key has been getting great
kids over the last few years. They certainly make the wins happen.
I don't play the games - the players do."
With
just a few games remaining in the 2005 regular season, Pinto's record
at Oakton is 100-43, a phenomenal .699 winning percentage.
In 2004, Pinto led the Raiders to a third-place finish in the NJCAA
Region IV Finals, the highest achievement of any baseball team in
Oakton history. The Raiders also won the NJCAA Region IV Sectional
Championship for a second year in a row. The success prompted the
Chicago Pitch and Hit Club to recognize Pinto as Community College
Coach of the Year.
In
his first year at Oakton, Pinto guided the Raiders to a record 41
wins in a season. He also led the team to the Skyway Conference Championship
and the Region IV Sectional Championship. In 2003, the Raiders posted
the best team ERA (1.99) in NJCAA Region IV and Pinto was named Skyway
Conference Best Newcomer Coach of the Year.
Some
of Pinto's players have gone on to pitch at the University of Tennessee,
Cal State Fullerton, and University of Washington. Others have advanced
to the professional ranks with the Washington Nationals, Cincinnati
Reds, Minnesota Twins, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Off
the field, Pinto is a nationally renowned motivational speaker who
presents seminars for Fortune 500 companies and athletic programs
across the country. He lives in Schaumburg with his wife, Lynne, and
their two sons.
