Themes
of hope, betrayal, racism, and moral responsibility abound in the
Performing Arts at Oakton production of "A Raisin in the Sun,"
Dec. 2 - 12, at the Footlik Theater on Oakton's Des Plaines campus,
1600 E. Golf Road.
Lorraine
Hansberry's groundbreaking 1959 play details the story of a Chicago
family chasing the American Dream. When the Younger family receives
an inheritance check, the family is divided on what to do with the
money. Deep cultural wounds are opened as the family tries to figure
out whose dreams will be realized.
In connection
with this production, Oakton will sponsor a free preview lecture,
"Race and the American Dream," at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec.
8. Director Alex Levy will discuss the progress made by African Americans
since the writing of the play. Topics also include how society deals
with racism, and if the American Dream still exists. The lecture will
be held in the Des Plaines campus theater lobby. Free parking is available
in Lot A.
Regular
performances of "A Raisin in the Sun" are 8 p.m., Fridays,
