Activist Says Iraq's Future Presaged By Troubled Afghanistan

The future of post-occupation Iraq may be reflected in the troubled current situation in Afghanistan, according to a representative of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA). Tahmeena Faryal returns to Oakton Community College on Monday, April 21, to discuss the experiences of Afghan refugees, as well as the status of women, the continued threat of fundamentalism and terrorism within Afghanistan.

Faryal is on a speaking tour of the U.S. to talk about RAWA's mission of non-violent resistance and its humanitarian and political work in Afghanistan and Pakistan, including medical care, education, vocational training and income-generating projects. She will be joined by Dr. Anne Brodsky, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, who has written a book about RAWA. They are available for a limited number of personal interviews.

Founded in 1977 by a young student named Meena, RAWA works to empower Afghan women and to further the peaceful creation of a free Afghan democracy. However, RAWA remains an underground organization due to its uncompromising stance against Afghanistan's oppressive political regimes. As a result, no photos or videography of Faryal's face will be allowed during her visit.
