Adult
volunteers, especially seniors, who are available to work on a preschool
literacy project are invited to an orientation tea Tuesday, March
30, 1:30 - 3 p.m., at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road.
The meeting will be held in Room 1610. Convenient and free parking
is available in Lot C.
The
"Reading Readiness Project" at Oakton's Early Childhood Demonstration
Center, is sponsored by a $2000 grant from retail giant Target. The
seven-week program, which runs April 12 through the end of May, allows
volunteers to work with children ages two to five on a variety of
reading and writing activities. Volunteers are asked to commit two
to three hours of their time, one day per week, at either Oakton campus
in Des Plaines or Skokie.
Suggested
projects include making books of stories developed and illustrated
by the children, and transcribing letters "dictated" by children to
family members. Such activities promote language skills in young children,
and feelings of self-worth in older volunteers.
