An exhibition
of works by Chicago artist Seymour Rosofsky, collected by his
former student and longtime friend, Bill Moll, will be presented May
6 through June 24 at Oakton Community College's Koehnline
Gallery, 1600 E. Golf Road. The public is invited to attend a
free reception with refreshments on Thursday, May 6, 5 - 8 p.m.
"Seymour
Rosofsky: Fresh Glance" is the first-ever exhibition of works collected
over two decades by Moll, who attended Rosofsky's art classes at Chicago's
Wright College in the early 1960s. The two became friends and painted
together until Rosofsky's death in 1981. These 35 works combine elements
of Expressionism and Surrealism to reflect Rosofsky's personal symbolism.
Three of Moll's illustrations of Rosofsky also are included in the
exhibition.
"There
is a kind of pathos in Rosofsky's grasp of the absurd, and a kind
of humanism in his task that remains accessible to audiences," writes
Diane Thodos, an Evanston-based artist and art critic, in her essay
featured in the Oakton exhibition catalog. "His example helped invent
a tradition that continues to influence many contemporary Chicago
artists today."
"Seymour
Rosofsky: Fresh Glance" will be on view May 6 through June 24 during
regular Gallery hours: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Fridays; and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays until May
31. Starting June 1, the Gallery will operate during summer hours,
10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, closed Fridays.
