The
Hon. George Van Dusen, mayor of the Village of Skokie and adjunct
faculty at Oakton Community College, is the recipient of the Illinois
Community College Trustees Association's 2007 Gary W. Davis Ethical
Leadership Award.
In his more than 30 years of public service as a congressional aide,
village trustee, and mayor, Van Dusen has demonstrated a strong commitment
to open and inclusive government. As an example of his ability to
handle tough ethical dilemmas with grace and creativity, Van Dusen
once acknowledged the Ku Klux Klan's right to gather in Skokie, but
urged residents to assemble at another location on the same day for
a "peace and harmony" convocation.
Established
in 2005, the Gary W. Davis Ethical Leadership Award recognizes individuals
who have made outstanding contributions to the pursuit and support
of ethical leadership and decision-making in their fields of work
and volunteer service. Additional winners of the 2007 award include
Margaret D. Hamilton, manager of the Older Adult Institute, College
of DuPage; Stephen Kubiczky, former Triton College trustee; and Linden
Warfel, trustee at Parkland College. The award is named for retired
ICCTA executive director, Gary Davis.
Van
Dusen was honored with the 2007 Gary W. Davis Ethical Leadership Award
during the ICCTA's recent annual convention in Springfield. The ICCTA
is a statewide organization created in 1970 as the voice of the state's
community college boards. ICCTA membership is comprised of trustees
from every public community college district in Illinois.
