Homebuilders
and rehabbers have access to a wide variety of products that can manage
anything from home entertainment and security systems to lighting
and climate control. Oakton Community College now offers two courses
to help anyone become more familiar with the installation and integration
of these "smart" devices.
Home
Technology Integration (ELT 108) is a 16-week, three credit-hour
course that meets Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the
Des Plaines campus.
Residential
Wiring (ELT 290) is a 16-week, three credit-hour course that meets
Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. at the Des Plaines campus.
Among
the topics covered by these courses are the integration of telephone,
cable television, and Internet services; home theater systems; wireless
control of various home devices; HVAC systems; security systems; lighting;
smart appliances, and much more.
"These
courses provide hands-on experience in the installation and configuration
of many types of 'smart' devices," says Majid Ghadiri, associate professor
of electronics. "For example, an individual could set up a visual
or auditory reminder to take their medication, and have a photo of
them taking the medication e-mailed to a family member or nurse at
another location."
