Sears Distinguished Leader Award Honors Harry Tankus
Oakton Community College Educational Foundation
Founding Board Member Recognized for Exemplary Volunteer Services

Harry Tankus is this year's winner of the Sears Distinguished Leader Award in recognition of his work on behalf of the Oakton Community College Educational Foundation. The award will be presented Monday, Nov. 18, at the Oakton Advisory Committee Recognition Dinner, 6 p.m. in the TenHoeve Center (room 1610) on the Des Plaines campus.

Tankus' volunteer leadership is credited with a nearly three-fold increase in annual donations to the Oakton Community College Educational Foundation and establishing an endowment for future college scholarships. During his 25 years as governing board member, he served two separate terms as foundation president and chaired numerous committees.

"Harry's sense of purpose and direction, ability to inspire trust and motivation for change, and willingness to confront tough issues and challenges are traits that have served as a model for my leadership," explains Oakton Community College President Margaret B. Lee.

Tankus worked at John Crane, Inc., for 40 years and retired as chairman of the board in 1987. He still consults for the company while providing 20 to 35 hours of volunteer service every week. In addition to the Oakton Community College Educational Foundation, he is a board member of Rush North Shore Medical Center, Chicago Lighthouse, and Center East Performing Arts Center. He also has served as trustee of the Illinois Institute of Technology, president of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, vice chairman of the United Way of Suburban Chicago, president of the United Way of Skokie Valley, and chairman of the community services committee of the United Way of Chicago. Tankus and his wife reside in Northfield.

Presented annually since 1995, the Sears Distinguished Leader Award is given to a northwest suburban leader who provides outstanding community service and volunteer leadership as a governing board member. The winner receives a crystal trophy, and the nominating nonprofit organization receives a $5,000 award from Sears.

Sears, Roebuck and Co. is a broadline retailer with significant service and credit businesses. In 2001, the company's annual revenue was more than $41 billion.

Established in 1969, Oakton Community College offers degree and certificate curricula for students preparing to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university, as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers. Oakton is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, Illinois Community College Board, and American Association of Community Colleges.
