Oakton Community College is offering three new courses for teachers seeking their initial endorsement in English as a Second Language (ESL), and for current ESL teachers who need re-certification credits. All courses are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education, and will be offered at the College's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Rd.Introduction to Linguistics (EGL 260) familiarizes students with the fundamental concepts of language, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and linguistics. This course will be offered during the summer from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Monday - Thursday, beginning June 10, and in the fall from 4:30 to 7:20 p.m., Mondays, beginning August 26.
Theories for Teaching ESL (EGL 261) introduces the basic concepts, principles and theories of TESOL. By comparing the relationship between theory and practice, students will gain skills and techniques necessary to become effective ESL teachers. Offered on Thursdays during the fall session from 5 to 7:50 p.m., beginning August 29.
Methods of Teaching ESL (EGL 262) examines methods of TESOL in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and provides hands-on experience working with ESL students. Offered during the summer session from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Monday - Thursday, beginning June 10, and during the fall session from 6 to 8:50 p.m., Wednesdays, beginning August 28.
Registration for summer and fall courses is currently underway. New students must return a completed Application for Admission form with a $25 non-refundable, one-time application fee before registering (application form can be found at www.oakton.edu). Students who have an application on file for summer session 2002, or who have attended Oakton within the last three years can register using the Touch-Tone Registration system weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To register by phone, call (847) 635-1616 and refer to the computer ID number listed in the summer and fall credit course schedules.
Oakton credit classes cost $54 per credit hour for in-district residents and employees of approved in-district companies.
