Two
Oakton Community College athletes will compete Monday, May 16, in
the 2005 NJCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field
Championship in Levelland, Texas.
Oakton
freshmen Jessica Baldino (Hanover Central High School), a resident
of Glenview, and Laura Haak (Maine South High School) of Park
Ridge are scheduled to participate in the 10,000-meter national championship
race.
"This is very rewarding, to see we have national caliber runners,"
said Mike Egle, outdoor track and field coach. "Neither runner has
had much previous experience, and both are beating runners who have
been competing since they were in junior high school. That shows our
recruiting has come a long way."
The
two women runners earned their honors by placing first April 28, at
the NJCAA Super Regional Championship at Vincennes University in Indiana.
Baldino finished her 5K race with a time of 19:25 and Haak competed
in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:26.
Baldino
and Haak are both members of Oakton's cross country team. Last fall,
they both competed in the NJCAA Cross County National Championship.
