A
volunteer tutor program at Oakton Community College has received a
$20,000 grant from the Chicago Tribune Charities-Holiday, a fund of
the McCormick Tribune Foundation, officials said. The grant, obtained
by Oakton's Educational Foundation, will allow the Volunteer in Teaching
Adults (VITA) program to continue its mission of assisting those who
seek to improve their English speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Each
semester, Oakton offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
to approximately 3,000 adults whose native language is not English.
The Tribune grant will be used to fund volunteer training and purchase
needed instructional supplies, including software and laptop computers.
Tutor training sessions are 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan.
8, and 6:30 - 10 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Oakton's Ray Hartstein
Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie.
