The
public is invited to a free lecture and book signing at Oakton Community
College featuring Edward Tick, Ph.D., author of the newly released
War and the Soul: Healing Our Nation's Veterans from Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (Quest Books). Tick will discuss his book from
11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Wed., Nov. 16th, in the main library on Oakton's
Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
From
the Vietnam vets who initially had no way to name their pain, to the
growing number of war casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan, War
and the Soul reveals the deep-rooted psychological and spiritual
issues behind post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition frequently
complicated by depression, substance abuse, memory lapse, and other
problems.
"With a resounding salute to those who have given their lives, this
book empowers us to overcome the soul loss that is the result of all
wars," says Jan Scruggs, founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) calls Tick's book "a fascinating look into
the minds of veterans."
This
free lecture and book signing is sponsored by Students for Social
Justice at Oakton, and Oakton Educators for Social Responsibility.
