Officials with the Cook County Department of Public Health will visit Oakton Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., to provide tips for the prevention of disease from the West Nile virus. The free information session runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 1610 on the Des Plaines campus, 1600 East Golf Road.The interactive presentation focuses on the prevention of West Nile virus through personal, environmental, and community efforts. Presenters for the Cook County Department of Public Health include Elaine Ricketts, education coordinator for emergency preparedness; Mark Matuck, assistant director of communicable disease control, and LaTrice Porter-Thomas.
The West Nile virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, and is marked by symptoms such as a rapid onset of fever, head and body aches, convulsions, and tremors. More than 300 cases of infection - including 18 deaths - were recorded in Cook County between July and October 2002. Most illness was found in residents 50 to 80 years old, and the most affected communities were Morton Grove, Wilmette, Evergreen Park, and Oak Lawn.
