Author
Sandra Bartky, Ph.D., professor of philosophy at the University of
Illinois, is the keynote speaker for Oakton Community College's annual
Women's Day. This year's conference, "A Whole New World: Women's
Studies and the Transformation of Higher Education," will be held
8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29, at the Des Plaines campus, 1600
E. Golf Road. This year's theme focuses on the 30-year evolution of
women's studies and its undeniable impact on other disciplines.
In her
presentation, "Suffering to be Beautiful," Bartky describes the underlying
pressures facing young women in an image-driven society. Bartky, who
has studied the feminine philosophy in diverse fields such as existentialism
and Marxism, will explain the consequences of harmful procedures that
women endure to become thin and beautiful.
Additional
Women's Day workshops include "Does Sex Really Matter?", "The Past
through Gendered Eyes: The Impact of Feminism on the Study of History,"
"The Rediscovered Muse: Women's Studies in the Arts and Humanities,"
"Issues of Gender in South Asian Literature," "The Forgotten Queens
of Islam," and "The Class Ceiling in the Ivory Tower."
Post-lunch
entertainment for Women's Day will be provided by singer-songwriter
Kristen Lems, a social activist who has supported such causes as the
Equal Rights Amendment, women's rights, safe energy, peace, and racial
equality.
Women's
Day also will include an art exhibition and afternoon tea from 3:15
to 4 p.m., in the Koehnline Gallery. The art presentation consists
of themed pieces from female artists in the Chicago area. The exhibition
will remain open until Nov. 5.
The
cost of Women's Day is $25 in advance (must register before Oct. 22),
and $30 at the door. Early registration includes a box lunch; lunch
