Cynthia
Becker, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history at Boston University,
shares her experiences with the Amazigh (Berber) societies of southern
Morocco, Monday, Nov. 27, at the Des Plaines campus of Oakton Community
College, 1600 E. Golf Road. Becker's presentation follows a continental
breakfast reception at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Admission
and parking are free (Lot D recommended).
Women
artists in Berber societies express themselves through the creation
of beautiful textiles, body adornment, and ritualized music and dance.
Becker's multimedia presentation, "Women and the Arts in Rural Morocco,"
draws on her first-hand observations living in this fascinating Islamic
culture. Becker's research is supported by grants from the Fulbright
Program and the American Institute of Maghreb Studies. She also is
the author of Amazigh Arts in Morocco: Women Shaping Berber Identity,
published by the University of Texas Press.
