John Himmelfarb's Work in Progress

Watch as Chicago artist John Himmelfarb completes a "work in progress."
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 25-Oct. 25
Oakton's Koehnline Gallery, 1600 E. Golf Rd.
No admission charge.

The large-scale canvas, measuring 30 feet wide and 12 feet high, is a continuation of Inland Romance, a series of paintings by the artist that combine strong, rich colors with symbolist text and hieroglyphic-like designs, expressing what he refers to as the vigor and vitality of America's urban settings. Two other canvases in this series are also being exhibited at the Koehnline Gallery through Oct. 25.

Himmelfarb's work is included in the collections of more than 40 institutions, such as the Art Institute of Chicago; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Musee National d'Art Moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Illinois State Museum, Springfield; Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University; and the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.

In conjunction with the Himmelfarb exhibition, Performing Arts at Oakton is presenting an original production, Inland Romance, that integrates improvisation, reader's theater and character monologues in a tribute to Chicago. Performed in the Koehnline Gallery against a backdrop of Himmelfarb's work, the production features the words of some of Chicago's greatest writers, including Nelson Algren, Carl Sandburg, Studs Terkel and Mike Royko.

Inland Romance performances are scheduled at:
8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 and 20
2 p.m., Sunday, Oct.14 and 21

Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling (847) 635-1900
