Oakton
Community College is one of 15 sites nationwide selected to host "Put
it in Writing @ your library," a free program for aspiring writers
sponsored by the American Library Association and Woman's Day
magazine. A workshop designed to promote the many resources and opportunities
available through libraries will be held during National Library Week,
on Tuesday, April 20, 1 -3 p.m., at Oakton's Des Plaines campus.
Oakton's
seminar on "how to get started as a writer" will feature Mary Ellen
Sullivan, a Chicago area freelance writer whose work has appeared
in Woman's Day, as well as The New York Times, Chicago
Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and Vegetarian Times.
Sullivan also is the author of Cows on Parade in Chicago, and
co-author of several Mobil travel guides.
"Libraries
are where great writers get started," says Sullivan. "Every writer
is a person who first fell in love with books. The library is an inspirational
- even magical - place for a writer. Not only do they offer tangible
evidence that ideas can transform into reality, but they provide a
refuge, a place to dream, and a touchstone for the writing community."
The workshop
is free, but reservations are required. Space is limited to 70 participants.
To make a reservation, call 847-635-1642. Free parking is available
in Lots A and D.
"Put
it in Writing @ your library" workshops also will be held at selected
libraries in Queens, New York; Montclair, New Jersey; Hartford, Connecticut;
Los Angeles; San Francisco; Denver; Baltimore; Atlanta; Boston, Columbia,
Missouri; Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina; Cincinnati; and Portland,
Oregon.
