Oakton Library Offers Free Writer's Workshop
National Program Sponsored by Woman's Day and American Library Association

Oakton Community College is one of 15 sites nationwide selected to host "Put it in Writing @ your library," a free program for aspiring writers sponsored by the American Library Association and Woman's Day magazine. A workshop designed to promote the many resources and opportunities available through libraries will be held during National Library Week, on Tuesday, April 20, 1 -3 p.m., at Oakton's Des Plaines campus.

Oakton's seminar on "how to get started as a writer" will feature Mary Ellen Sullivan, a Chicago area freelance writer whose work has appeared in Woman's Day, as well as The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and Vegetarian Times. Sullivan also is the author of Cows on Parade in Chicago, and co-author of several Mobil travel guides.

"Libraries are where great writers get started," says Sullivan. "Every writer is a person who first fell in love with books. The library is an inspirational - even magical - place for a writer. Not only do they offer tangible evidence that ideas can transform into reality, but they provide a refuge, a place to dream, and a touchstone for the writing community."

The workshop is free, but reservations are required. Space is limited to 70 participants. To make a reservation, call 847-635-1642. Free parking is available in Lots A and D.

"Put it in Writing @ your library" workshops also will be held at selected libraries in Queens, New York; Montclair, New Jersey; Hartford, Connecticut; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Denver; Baltimore; Atlanta; Boston, Columbia, Missouri; Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina; Cincinnati; and Portland, Oregon.

For more information, contact Susan Maltese, chair of library and media services, at 847-635-1649, or visit the American Library Association at www.ala.org/@yourlibrary.
