Oakton to Document Nursing Bridge Program
A nursing bridge program developed by Oakton may be more easily replicated around the state thanks to a $40,000 grant from the Illinois Community College Board, with support from the Joyce Foundation.
The grant funds will be used to document Oakton’s effort to help certified nursing assistants at Presbyterian Homes gain the education they need to pass the licensed practical nurse certification exam and enter a registered nurse associate degree program. The College will develop a 30- to 40-page “blueprint” guide for other Illinois community colleges to implement similar partnerships and bridge programs.
“This grant has the potential to help lots of people,” said Dennis Graham, dean of science and health careers. “Our nursing advisor, faculty, and admissions staff all worked together to assess the needs of certified nursing assistants and develop a pathway for Presbyterian Homes employees to enhance their training and skills.”
The grant was solicited by Carrie Kelly, nursing advisor, and Sue Deahr, student recruitment and outreach assistant.
During the past fiscal year, Oakton received more than $2.3 million in federal, state and competitive grant funding.
