Welcome
to Online Courses
|
We are pleased you have registered
for an online course(s) and hope you have a successful learning
experience at Oakton.
Follow the steps below to get started
learning online.
|
Step One: |
Find Out Course Requirements |
|
| |
Confirm whether your course is a WebCT course or not.
Course information is posted on the Courses Offered page. Click on the course ID and your instructor's name (if activated). It is also posted in your course website.
Find out
what will be expected of you in your online course(s). Check out
these guidelines
on what to look for.

Step Two:
|
Activate Your Email Address |
| |
Faculty need an email address for communicating with you. You can activate the Oakton email address provided to students or supply another email address for forwarding Oakton correspondence.
After logging into My Oakton ( http://my.oakton.edu ), select the email icon near the top of the page to check that your preferred email address is active. If not, refer to the instructions provided or go to Update Email Addresses listed under Personal Information in the Register/Pay/Grades tab of your My Oakton web page.
|
|
| Step Three: |
Log-in to Your Course Website
on the start date of the course |
| |
Access to online courses generally does not open until the start date of the course. WebCT is the course management software used to deliver most of Oakton's online courses.
You can generally access your online course from My Oakton by clicking on the course name listed under My Courses . For WebCT courses, you will be linked directly to the course homepage or course information your instructor has provided. You can also access a WebCT course at http://elearn.oakton.edu:8900 . See instructions for logging in to a WebCT course and, if needed, troubleshooting guide.
Several courses are not offered in WebCT even though they may be listed there. You can click on the course ID on the Courses Offered page to see if your course uses WebCT. If not, log-in instructions will be provided by your instructor |
|
|
Step Four:
|
Prepare
for Success Online |
| |
We want you to be successful in your online course. Be sure to start your coursework promptly on the course start date and seek assistance right away, if needed.
A WebCT Tutorial is available to students registered for an online course. It will be listed in your MyWebCT along with your online courses.
The structure of the tutorial is similar to what you will experience in your online courses. You will learn how to navigate a course website, access course materials, and use features of WebCT, such as the discussion board, chatroom and assignment tools. For each of the WebCT features, you can view a Flash movie explaining how to use that feature and then try it out yourself. The tutorial is offered as a resource; it is not required or graded.
In addition, these resources are provided to help you know what to expect and prepare for success
