Campus Safety Information
Although Oakton remains a
safe environment in which to work, taking some simple precautions can
reduce the opportunity for crime. For example:
- Remain alert to your surroundings
and the people around you.
- Watch your personal belongings.
Do not leave them unattended, even for a few moments. Lock wallets
and purses in your desk when you leave your work station.
- Mark or etch valuables
with your driver’s license number. For your convenience, Public
Safety at either campus will engrave your personal items (Room 1170,
Des Plaines; and Room C100, Skokie).
- If you lose or misplace
an item remember to check with “Lost and Found” in the
Public Safety Office. Both office campuses secure found property in
a cabinet and valuable item in a locked cabinet.
- When parking your vehicle,
remember to keep all valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk.
- Remain alert when walking
outside after dark. If you feel unsure about walking to your vehicle
call Public Safety and we can provide an escort to your vehicle.
- Remain alert when entering
an elevator with a lone stranger. Get on with a group if possible.
Stand near the control panel. If necessary, push the alarm button.
- Report all sexual assault
and sexual harassment.
- Report suspicious behavior,
regardless of how insignificant or harmless the activity may be.
If you have any questions
regarding safety and security issues on campus, please call the non-emergency
numbers for Public Safety. At Des Plaines the number is 1880 and at
Skokie the number is 1422.
If you need to report an
emergency and need an immediate response, call 1888.
