How to Report an Emergency

To report a police emergency, or to report a crime in progress, dial “1888” from any campus in-house telephone. This number rings at the Des Plaines Campus but the office staff notifies public safety officers via radio at both campuses. It is our responsibility to act quickly and responsibly.

If you are faced with a situation that requires a medical emergency, then call “911” for the Des Plaines Fire Ambulance, and then “1888” for public safety.

If there is a fire please locate and activate the fire alarm on the walls in various locations, and then call “1888” for Public Safety. If a fire alarm sounds then leave immediately with your valuables via the nearest exit. Oakton does not have fire drills.

For immediate police/safety protection in a life or death situation, follow the same procedure: nearest campus phone – call “911” first and then “1888”.

To report a suspicious person/incident, or if you need to speak to a Public Safety Officer, dial “1880”for the Des Plaines Campus and “1422” for the Skokie/Ray Hartstein Campus from any campus in-house telephone.

If you are off campus you may dial 847-635-1880 for the Des Plaines campus or 847-635-1422 for Skokie/Ray Hartstein campus.

If you are inside/outside on both campuses there are red Telephone Police Call Boxes, which are directly connected to Public Safety.

If you are in the parking lot, there are “Blue Light” Intercom Campus Police Call Boxes installed on light poles in most of our campus lots. When activated, you will be able to talk directly to the Public Safety office.

You can come directly to the Public Safety office, located in the main lobby of both campuses. You can also approach a uniformed officer or uniformed student cadet to request assistance or report an incident.
