Native
American Images
Photographer Anthony Stetina has chronicled many architectural and sculptural
depictions of Native Americans and Europeans created during the exploration
and settlement of Illinois. These stone carvings, bronze castings, stained
glass, and painted wood depictions are from the late 19th and early 20th
centuries and appear on commercial buildings, civic structures, and church
windows.
[Student Street, Des Plaines campus]
History
of Florida Sponge Diving
Photographer Donald Marks presents a series of images that document the
Tarpon Springs, Florida, sponge diving industry over the last century.
This industry arrived in Florida from Greece in the early 1900s and was
quite successful—to the point that a world market “sponge
exchange” was established in Tarpon Springs and Key West. The industry
remains vibrant in Tarpon Springs today, with sponge docks, sponge diving
boat tours, many Greek restaurants, and an historic art and antique district.
[Skokie campus]
