Spanish Civil War: Journey to Pan’s Labyrinth
9 - 9:30 a.m.

The Spanish Civil War took place between 1936 and 1939 and serves as the historical context for the film Pan’s Labyrinth. More than 500,000 people died in this political and ideological struggle, a virtual prelude to the confrontation between fascist and liberal forces that spread out across Europe during World War II. Join Guiller Bosqued, assistant professor of Spanish, to consider the causes of the conflict, its parallels with World War II, and the effects of Franco’s dictatorship on modern Spain. [Room 1608]

A Director’s Look at The Glass Menagerie

[Room1604]

The audience is invited to participate in demonstrations of dances including the Congo Snake and Flaming Limbo Bar, as well as skip rope footwork techniques. [Cafeteria]

Sing Out For Peace with the Folktons

A genuine “culture of peace” is one that supports social justice, human rights, education, equality, tolerance, security, and democratic participation for all citizens of the world. Join the Folktons to celebrate peace and protest violence through powerful songs by Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Pete Seeger, Bob Marley and other songwriters of conscience. [Cafeteria]

Convergence: Jewish and African American Artists in Depression-era Chicago
2 - 3 p.m.

During the Great Depression, artists of diverse backgrounds found ways not only to document the pain of the era, but also create images of hope. Join Nathan Harpaz, curator of the Koehnline Museum of Art and instructor of art history, for a presentation revealing the cooperative spirit between Jewish and African American artists in Chicago during this challenging period of history.
