Tale of Two Cities: New Orleans Before and After Katrina

Join Judy Langston, professor of art and graphic design, for a special
presentation about New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina. Many
of Langston’s photographs were taken in 2007, as she accompanied
Oakton’s Students for Social Justice to the Lower Ninth Ward to
assist in cleanup and rebuilding efforts by Common Ground. [Room 1608]

Efforts in Senegal and Zimbabwe

This program looks at two campaigns working to improve the lives of women
and children in Africa. The Women’s Global Education Project provides
access to education and training programs designed to empower women and
girls to build better lives for themselves and foster equitable and sustainable
communities in Senegal. Vanavevhu is an advocacy group for women and girls
negatively impacted by the economic and health crises in Zimbabwe. Listen
as representatives from these two organizations talk about their work
and how you can join them in making a difference. [Room 1606]

Join Keiko Anno instructor of Japanese, for an immersion into the culture
of Japan. Learn about the paper folding art of origami, Japanese martial
arts, flower arrangement, calligraphy, and kimono. [Room 1610]
Kalapriya
– Arts of India

Experience the beautiful customs of India through the choreography of
Kalapriya Dance. This ensemble, founded in 1994, specializes in Bharatanatyam—an
ancient dance form that uses stylized hand gestures, theatrical facial
expressions, intricate footwork, and complicated rhythms to visualize
poetry, mythology and universal themes. [Cafeteria]
