The
Persian Wars: The Real Story of the 300
2 - 3 p.m.
The Persian Wars of 490 BCE and 480-79 BCE have long been regarded as
a turning point in history. The Athenians’ triumph at Marathon over
the great army fielded by the mighty Persian Empire, and the subsequent
defeat of an even larger Persian army and naval fleet by a coalition of
31 small Greek city states at Salamis and Plataea, did indeed influence
historical events and the development of democracy. This presentation
by Frances Mitilineos, instructor of history, offers new scholarship by
Paul Cartledge, who argues against Marathon’s importance as the
definitive confrontation. [Room 1610]
